The Ache

There is an ache
older than memory.
It lives
beneath the ribs,
behind the breath,
in the space
between who I am
and who I sense
I was meant to be.
It is not sadness.
It is the soul
pulling me
toward itself—
toward the version
of this life
I keep almost
living.
