The Gift of This Day, Book One
Reflections on Gratitude, Presence, and the Miracle of the Ordinary
365 daily prayers. Each begins the same way.
Thank you for the gift of this day.
Three hundred and sixty-five prayers. Each one begins with that line. Each one ends with Amen.
They were not written for a book. They were written in the hours before the day took hold — spoken into the silence, alone, for no audience. They were written for survival. For steadiness. For the plain work of beginning again.
They ask for very little. Let me be generous — not only with what I have, but with who I am. Give me the strength I need. Not more than I need. Just enough to be present.
There is no doctrine here, and no god is named. These prayers are addressed to something the book never asks you to define. Bring your faith, or bring your searching. Both are welcome, and neither is corrected.
My mother prayed like this. Silently, in kitchens and parking lots, every day of her life. She was not a writer. She lost her speech to dementia years before she died, and I could still hear her voice.
I wrote most of these afterward.
Read one a morning, or open the book anywhere and let the page find you. There is no wrong way. The only ask is that you show up — and give yourself a moment of stillness before the world starts asking for your attention.
Two volumes. The same prayer, on either side of a loss.
